Excellant Mogarashi Soten Tsuba. Mei(signature):Soten Saku. The design depicts a scene from Genpei war 1181-1185 between Minamoto and Taira clan. The Samurai Yoshitsune becomes the great warrior of lore, helping his brother Yoritomo defeat the Taira clan to establish the Kamakura Shogunate. The subject of this piece is expressed with great strength and beauty in a high relief carving which is typical work of the Soten school. This type of early Soten style tsuba signed is a particularly rare example as those un-signed by the school artist. Jidai(era); Middle Edo period. Maru-gata shaped Tsuba. Length:6.22cm x 5.81cm. The rich brown plate is deeply pierced and delicatly carved in hikone bori, decorated in iroe takazogan, while the sky behind is in sukashi work. Fukurin is covered in gold. Special feature of Kogai-ana and Kozuka-ana filled with gold. | |
