Sennin on Ox Tsuba

The scene depicts a Sennin riding on an Ox being led by a Herdboy. Sennin's are hermits capable of performing miracles.
Late Edo period (circa 1800).
This tsuba is made of Shakudo (alloy of copper and gold). The surface is Nanako-Ji (made with a small punch). The Sennin and Ox are in high refief carving called Takabori.
The shape is Mokko-Gata (four lobed).
Size is 6.8cm x 6.1cm x 0.3cm.
The following is a description of the various techniques used for expressing the scenes.
The Takabori reliefs were worked separately in several different metals and then 'inlaid' into the Shakudo Nanako-Ji ground.
The old Plum tree with flowers, Kiku flowers and (bamboo?)leaves are expressed in brass inlay using high-relief carving techniques.
The Fukurin is inlaid with brass.
This is a very beautiful tsuba done in a variety of techniques. It is estimated to take over three months to complete this kind of tsuba.
