Kyo Sukashi Tsuba.
Momoyama/Edo period ca. 1600.
The patina is good, shows the quality of the earlier works. The design is of Paulownia (Kirimon) and leaves which are well cut.
The paulownia is the tree in which the sacred phoenix is thought to nest.
For this reason it has long been associated with the Japanese emperor.
It also became the crest emblem of many warrior families and symbolizes fame and honor.
The walls of the sukashi and the rim are thicker creating a robust feeling.
