Awa Shoami School

Period:

Edo period.

Basic Shape:

Round or nadekakugata.

Seppa-dai:

Usually not designated though its shape may be outlined as part of the design.

Hitsu-ana:

Shapes vary, though most are common to the Shoami school.

Web:

Most are flat with polished surface.

Edge:

Most are kakumimi.

Design Characteristics:

The decoration of this school is its main attribute. The quality of the plate is usually ordinary and of secondary importance. The ability of these artists as inlayers is exceedingly fine.

Plate Metal:

Early work is shinchu plate, after the fifth generation the plate is iron.
