"Oval iron mokume ground plate with negative sukashi design of pine trees below a cloudy sky with a half sun in gold nunome. The kogai hitsu is plugged in shakudo and a seki-gane inserted in the kozuka hitsu, also of shakudo.

The face is signed: 'Chikushu (Chikugo) Kurume Kuwano Kazuhira' (H 02987.0). He was born in 1743 and was still working in 1814.

This artist was first recorded by Akiyama Kyusaku from an example in his collection. The work of this artist is rather rare and we see examples in the Kokubo and Halberstadt collections, but this work is superior to those recorded so far. The work of this rare artist has been overlooked by other collectors and more note should be taken of his artistic ability." (Haynes)
