"Oblong iron mokko plate with very fine mokume (wood grain) surface. Bottom center is a sukashi opening of inome shape, which could be used as an udenuki-ana.

The face is signed: 'Sashu ju Toshiuji' H 10631.0, he signed pieces at the age of 70 and 72, and dated pieces in 1805 and 1832.

The later Sado Island school was a group of six to eight artists who made, for the most part, rather ordinary iron plate tsuba. This example is far superior to most of the work of this group and shows great forging skill." (Haynes)
7.6cm x 8.0cm x 0.3cm

A Collaboration of Robert E. Haynes and Elliott D. Long
