The mokko plate with inome corners at the indentations, hearkens back to the shape of tsuba worn on the court tachi of the Heian and Kamakura periods. The flush inlay was used on the abumi because raised inlay might have been caught on the horse trappings."<BR><BR>"The subjects of this tsuba are various, such as pine cones, half kiku bloom, cloth encampment screen, water lines, clouds, money bag, bamboo leaves, and half mon. These subjects are to be found in other art objects and many fittings of the period, which is early Muromachi times."<BR><BR>"The hitsu is original and classic to the period. There is good reason to believe that this style and shape of tsuba predates the more common Onin work of a slightly later date. The artists of the Kaga area were making brass inlay abumi and fittings long before the Edo period. I know of only a half dozen other examples like this, recorded from this period."
