KENJO Tsuba

PROVENANCE:    Robert E. Haynes SOLD-Reference Only
"Oval iron plate tsuba with design of a subject from a No drama. The solid areas are covered in fine gold nunome, including the rim. There is a bugaku dance hat, a curtain with kiku and kiri mon design, and a maple tree branch. This design is repeated on the reverse.

This is a KENJO (presentation) tsuba. It was intended as a gift, most often from one daimyo to another, but by this time, ca. 1800, it might also have been from a merchant, such as a pawn broker, or sake brewer, for they had as much, if not more wealth, than most of the daimyo who were in debt to them.

A very fine quality of the later Kenjo style of tsuba." (Haynes)
6.80cm x 6.50cm x 0.50cm.
