"Round iron plate carved with the design of a tiger near a water fall and under a pine tree. The head of the tiger in very high relief inlay of iron on iron. With gold dots on the ground area, lower left. The reverse with a continuation of the landscape design from the front, and four large dots of gold inlay.

Signed on the reverse: 'Horeki gen nen shimotsuke gatsu nichi', a day in October-November 1751. The first of Horeki was October 27, 1751. The face is signed: 'Chikuzen Fukuoka ju Fujinaka' and Kao.

The daimyo at Fukuoka, at this time, was the Kuroda family. See H 00173.0 under Bensuke, and H 00487.0 under Fujinaka. As you know Fujinaka is a family name and it is only found in relationship to this artist, and two others, Joen H 02120.0 and Sotetsu H 08944 and H 08945, but these other artists seem to have confusion about the family name and in any case seem not to be related to each other. The Bensuke artist might be this same man but there might be other members of this group. In any event this is a highly important work for the information that it contains which has never been recorded before." (Haynes)
