KANEIYE (Mumei)

Return to Tsuba Collective

Provenance:    Elliott D. Long $800.00
"Oval shaped iron tsuba with low relief design of landscape and shoreline with lantern and moon and the reverse with more landscape and mountains. It is possible that the vegetation carved was done at a later time. Both sides showing fine examples of iron on iron inlay with details inlaid in gold. The rim is beautifully done. With hammer pounded patterns, and a single hitsu-ana.

Though unsigned, this is a fine example by KANEIYE of Fushimi, Yamashiro Province during the Momoyama period.

Apart from Joshu Kaneiye there were other masters (not generations) working at the same time, each with his own identifiable signature and characteristics. It is almost certain they were Buddhist monks perhaps all from the same temple. This tsuba appears to be part of that group based on its forging technique. A very important study piece." (Haynes & Long)
7.9cm x 8.2cm x 0.30cm
