'YOSHICHIKA' & Kao

Provenance: Elliott Long Not For Sale
"The iron base, which bears rough traces of the hammer that hammered and forged it, is round with some tapering towards the edge. Granular steel that shines particularly black can be seen around the edge and in places on the flat ground. One side of the large openwork opening on either side is filled with quarter-grain ground, and a dragon and a tiger are carved into it. This technique was Yoshichika's forte. The tiger has a thin carving inside its powerful outline, and the round dragon is inlaid with high-pitched carvings on a red copper base.

Yoshichika (H 11457.0) was a pupil of swordsmith Hoki no Kami Masayuki. Retainer of the Shimazu Daimyo of Satsuma. His tsuba resemble old Nara school style work.

Late Edo period, Satsuma province. Iron, Shibuichi and Shakudo inlays.
NBTHK certificate: Hozon tosogu." (Haynes & Long)
