"Rare item with box inscription by Shibata Kazuo, dated 1970, and a certificate of preservation and fittings. Excellent tsuba "Nine Years of Mother" by Umeda Tada Shigenari, no hole-inscribed tsuba. Early to mid-Edo period, Shichizaemon-dojin, copy of Akiju . Iron base, vertically rounded, square edge, small edge, single edge carving, gold cloth inlay, and shadow-like pattern. This tsuba is the work of Shibata Kazuo, author of Towa (Japanese Sword Shibata) and numerous books on swords. His box inscription is rare, and this is the first time I have seen it. As the box inscription commentary states, this is a fine tsuba, a copy of Umetada Akiju's famous tsuba "Nine Years of Mother." Umetada Shigenari was a metalworker from Yamashiro, but he was also a skilled craftsman who served the Edo Shogunate and was stationed in Edo. Although the gold cloth inlay has some wear, this is a well-forged, well-crafted tsuba." (Haynes & Long) Length: 8.20cm x Width: 7.74cm x Face thickness: 0.49cm |
