"A rare and rare item, Sado exile, Sashu Kokosaku, Sanzaemon double inscription [Tsuba with certificate of preservation of sword fittings] Iron base, irregular shape, round edge, carved edges, openwork, hair carving.
Approx. 78.2mm long x 75mm wide , edge thickness approx. 4.4-5mm , cutting blade base thickness approx. 4.7mm , approx. 136g , custom-made tsuba box included
This iron tsuba is inscribed with Sanzaemon, the founder of Sado tsuba, who was exiled to Sado in 1674 after committing a crime in Edo. It is extremely rare to see both the early and later inscriptions, Sashu Kokosaku on the cutting blade base and Sanzaemon on the back. Some books say that a tsuba inscribed with Sanzaemon has never been seen, or that the two inscriptions are written as if they were written by different people, but a book compiling the history of Sado states that they are the same person. (Reference image available) This tsuba is made of well-forged, moist jigane, with delicately carved chrysanthemum flowers. On page 178 of the Nihontoban Zusetsu, the tsuba with the same design is listed with only a Kokomei (favourite old name), and it seems to be a design that he was good at." (Haynes & Long)
