Provenance:    Robert Haynes NFS

"Excellent quality Onin Tsuba "Nakachigaimon Openwork". This is a thin, large-sized tsuba with a richly patinated finish. While some of the dot inlay has fallen off, it is in excellent condition. The openwork appears to be a chigi or nakachigaimon pattern. Onin tsuba are items that were produced mainly in Kyoto from the Muromachi and Onin periods, this one dated ca.1400, and the term first came into use in the Meiji period. It is characterized by brass inlay of dots and lines on a thin iron base, and often has small openwork designs added. This tsuba is also thinly layered, with brass inlay dots arranged in a circle. The openwork is a direct cross pattern (leaving only the outline). The hitsu was added at a later date." (Long)
