"Presented here is a perfect example of the work created by MASATOSHI, the younger brother of KAMIYOSHI RAKUJU. It is a beautiful finely forged iron masterpiece with very finely carved fronds creating the shape of the tsuba. He worked mostly in the style of RAKUJU but never signed his work. Distinctive hidden chisel marks, three above and five below the nakago-ana, can be seen. Recent research has associated this arrangement with the works of MASATOSHI, providing an important clue in considering the attribution of this unsigned work. The powerful character of the iron, intricate openwork, and beautifully balanced arrangement of the fronds combine to create a tsuba that exemplifies the refined aesthetic of Kamiyoshi metalwork."
