"Round iron plate tsuba with the web carved with a design of two Ho-o birds (Phoenix). This example is remarkable in the very fine kebori carving and attention to detail. In all respects, this is one of the finest examples of this school.
Dates to ca. 1600-1650." (Long)

8.50cm x 0.45cm thick at rim.
In Japan the mythical Phoenix (Ho-o) was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularily the empress. This mythical bird represents fire, the sun, justice, obedience and fidelity. The phoenix has a birds beak, a swallows jaw, and a snakes neck; the front half of its body is thought to resemble a giraffe, the back half a deer. Its back resembles a tortoise, and its tail is like a fish.
The Ho-o bird became a popular decorative motif in the Nara period (late 7-8c), and was used on a wide variety of items including mirrors, chests, and lacquerware.
