KAGAMI-SHI

Return to Tsuba Collective

Provenance:  Elliott Long $3000.00
"A rare ko-kinko tsuba known as a KAGAMI-SHI (Mirror Craftsman) in hexagonal bronze shape with a traditional dragon pattern set against a wave background, reminiscent of bronzeware. The mote-mimi features carved arabesque patterns. It is completely un-altered or ubu. Realize that while in classic mirror maker style, it was made with original hitsuana and intended for use on katana. This style was popular among high ranking samurai who required uchigatana or katana on the battlefield and maintained traditional style and workmanship.
This tsuba is made of solid bronze and cast as a solid piece of metal, with a large amount of high-relief carving of the original plate. This carving technique is termed fukabori, a variant of sukidashi-bori.
Overall, this tsuba is an extremely well-preserved, rare and valuable early soft-metal work dating to Early Muromachi period, ca. 1400." (Haynes & Long)
