A dignified and excellent kogai attributed to Inabanosuke (ref. H 01894.0) of the prestigious Yoshioka family. This family prospered throughout the Edo period, from the first Shigetsugu (ref. H 08515.0) (who moved to Edo during the Keicho period) to the ninth Shigesada (ref. H 08448.0), as craftsmen employed by the Tokugawa shogunate, along with the Goto family and others. Reference: Haynes Index H 01894.0, Wakayama Vol.II,Pg.181. The motif is of a warrior mounted on horseback wielding a yari with highlites in gold. The kogai is made of black shakudo (赤銅), polished with fine detailed carving. (E. Long) |
