Provenance: Robert E. Haynes | Under Study |
"This is a yamagane hammered cross mokko shape square nine star openwork tsuba, unsigned, with a variation ground finish, double-hole openings, shadow openwork, small corner edge, and comes in a double box. It is a treasured item from a Higo metalwork collector. Eight examples of the same shape are listed in the "Higo Taikan." The creators are Hayashi Matashichi, Kamiyoshi Rakuju, and Suwa Ikuhei. All are made of iron. The one listed on page 246 of "Openwork Tsuba" is a work by Jingo III. Nishigaki and Hirata do not have it, but it may be a work by Hirata Hikozo, who specialized in Yamagane. If so, it may be a great discovery. " (Haynes) |
