"This is a very fine nanako (fish roe) and kurikara (gold-plated sash) with a signature by Goto Mitsuro, raised carving, hair engraving, gold inlay, and gold-plated lining. It comes in a paulownia wood box. The material is estimated. This is a masterpiece of the Goto family, featuring a stunning design. The raised kurikara represents an incarnation of Acala, a design highly favored by samurai. It is exquisitely detailed, down to the finest detail. The nanako is extremely detailed, and the placement of the dragon's carving is also exquisite. Only the dragon's eyes are gold inlay, enhancing its simple beauty. While there is some aging, fading, and deformation, the condition is good. The dragon retains its historical dust.
An explanation of Goto Mitsuro is found on page 93 of "Wakayama Volume 2." He was the tenth head of the Goto family, Renjo, who was the head of the family when the shogunate ordered the family to move from Kyoto to Edo." (E. Long) |
