Provenance:  Elliott D. Long $1500.00
A sword fitting metalsmith in the middle of the Edo period. Son of Chuzaemon Tsuchiya, a feudal retainer of the Shonai Domain. At first he became a disiple of Chinkyu Shoami (Sato), who was from the same home town, and later took his daughter as his wife. In 1703, at the age of 34, he left for Edo and settled in Shinkakuya-cho, Kanda, and became an apprentice of Nara Tatsumasa. Around 1707, he stayed in Suwa, Shinano Province (Nagano Prefecture), and during the Shotoku era (1711-16), he served Matsudaira Daigakuto Yorisada, the lord of the Oshu Moriyama Domain, temporarily lived in the residence of Otsuka in Edo. In 1730, at the age of 61, he shaved his head and called himself Tou.
Along with Riju Nara and Noriyoshi Sugiura, he was prized as one of the Nara San Saku, and among them, he has left the most works. They are produced in a wide variety of ways, and the carefully selected materials harmonize well with the ingenious forms and rich patterns. In addition to pictorial and design-like designs, there are also designs based on historical events, and these are limited to techniques such as inlay, overglaze painting, sukidashi carving, flesh carving, high carving, hair carving, and katakiri carving.
