'YAMAKICHIBEI'    $900.00
"A small iron plate of mokko-gata shape, its forging and its tsuchime, and the classic Yamakichibei yakite-shitate treatment, confirms an early 17th century guard. The sukashi elements are routine and uninspired.
Signed: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. This is the signature of the fifth master of the Momoyama to early Edo Yamakichibei workshop, done by a top student. Dates to ca. 1625." (Long)
7.00cm x 7.60cm x 0.45cm

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    SOLD
"A 'Dango' sukashi iron tsuba of muttsu-mokko-gata shape. Once again a beautiful effect is realized by the combination of tekkotsu on the plate and a yakita-shitate treatment.
Signature: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. Another wonderful example of a Daisaku/Daimei piece of the fifth master of the early Yamakichibei atelier." (Long)
6.82cm x 7.30cm x 0.40cm

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    $1000.00
"A mokko-gata iron tsuba with rustic sobriety and unpretentiousness as achieved by the Yamakichibei lineage is perfect in keeping with Zen aesthetic sensibilities that were popular during its time of manufacture. Furthermore, the overall quality, purple-ish color and abundance of globular and linear tekkotsu illustrates the close relationship to the origin of the school.
Signed: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'.This is the signature of the fifth master of the Momoyama to early Edo Yamakichibei workshop, done by a top student." (Long)
6.40cm x 7.00cm x 0.35cm

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    $900.00
"A small iron plate of mokko-gata shape, its forging and its tsuchime, and the classic Yamakichibei yakite-shitate treatment, confirms an early 17th century guard. The hitsu-ana are of kozuka shape but of different size. The lone sukashi in the upper-right quadrant is of a small Dharma doll, representing the Zen aesthetic. The nakago-ana has copper inserts.
Signed: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. This is the GODAI master smith of the Momoyama Yamakichibei workshop. Appears to have been made by the master, rather than being a daisaku/daimei piece. The workmanship expresses more feeling and power. Dates to ca. 1600." (Long)
6.20cm x 6.70cm x 0.40cm

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    $1600.00
"A large, and powerful iron tsuba in muttsu-mokko-gata shape. The tsuchime, yakite, and tekkotsu are very well expressed. The rim and hammer work are of the GODAI Yamakichibei which confirms the signature.
Signature: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. This tsuba is the work of the GODAI Yamakichibei." (Long)
8.40cm x 8.45cm x 0.25cm (seppa)

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    $1700.00
"A large, and powerful iron tsuba in muttsu-mokko-gata shape. The tsuchime, yakite, and tekkotsu are very well expressed.
Signature: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. Barely visible, but suggests the GODAI master smith. The working and finish of the plate point to the GODAI Yamakichibei's work. The round punch marks around the nakago-ana are normally used by the YONDAI Yamakichibei. Such round punch marks are almost always seen on his works, but not on those of the other master smiths. This then, would be an exception." (Waszak/Long)
8.30cm x 8.55cm x 0.30cm

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    SOLD
"A large and dominating iron tsuba in muttsu-mokko-gata shape. The tsuchime, yakite, and mass of tekkotsu are at the highest quality. This is at the extreme end of Yamakichibei expression. The motif is of the Owari dango associated with Oda Nobunaga and is very well rendered. The hitsu appear in Shoami shape.
Signature: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. A masterwork of the GODAI Yamakichibei. As seen here, when he himself made pieces to the best of his ability, he was as good as any other smith in the early Yamakichibei atelier." (Waszak/Long)
8.30cm x 8.70cm x 0.38cm (seppa), 0.45cm (edge)

'YAMAKICHIBEI'    $6500.00
"Bold and powerful, excellent iron plate and finish with a classic motif rendered with more life and energy than we see in any other masterworks. The negative openwork is of a wild goose and kama (sickle). Some might see this piece as the epitome of aesthetic sensibilities as expressed in a tsuba.
Signature: 'YAMAKICHIBEI'. This was made by the YONDAI Yamakichibei master, not a daisaku or daimei. A Momoyama period masterwork." (Long)
7.70cm x 8.35cm x 0.25cm (seppa), 0.40cm (edge)
